The Australian Respiratory Council (ARC) acknowledges with great sadness the passing of Emeritus Professor J Paul Seale AM, a distinguished physician, academic and researcher, and a longstanding leader and supporter of ARC.
Professor Seale made an exceptional contribution to respiratory medicine in Australia and internationally. He was Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Sydney from 1992 to 2014 and a Consultant Physician at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital from 1980 to 2013. Professor Seale’s career included senior leadership positions within the University of Sydney, the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Asia Pacific Society of Respirology.
Professor Seale had a particularly significant and enduring association with ARC. He joined the ARC Board in 1997, served as Vice-President from 2003 to 2012, and as President from 2013 to 2019. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the organisation, he was elected a Life Governor of ARC in 2007.
Professor Seale’s commitment to tuberculosis elimination was also reflected in his service as Chair of the Sydney South West Area Health Service Tuberculosis Committee and as a member of the NSW Ministry of Health Tuberculosis Advisory Committee.
Throughout his association with ARC, Professor Seale brought considerable clinical, research and governance expertise to the organisation. His leadershipcontributed to ARC’s development and its longstanding commitment to improving respiratory health and supporting tuberculosis prevention and elimination.
Professor Seale’s distinguished contribution to medicine and respiratory health was recognised in 2014 when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
The Board acknowledges Professor Seale’s two decades of service to ARC and records its sincere appreciation for his leadership, expertise and commitment to the organisation. Professor Seale’s contribution forms an important part of ARC’s history, and his legacy will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.
The Board extends its deepest condolences to Paul’s wife Rosemary, his son David, daughter Kirsten, their families, friends and colleagues.
